Pediatrics Staff for Jaffna Medical School

Jaffna Medical Faculty is facing an acute shortage of Staff / Consultants. There are no academic staff in the Department of Paediatrics and, as a result, the final year students are unable to complete their professorial appointments. Hence, the Faculty is compelled to send their students to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for Paediatrics Professorial appointments. Similarly, there are no professional academic staff in Surgery and Gynaecology & Obstetrics.

Few  doctors have responded to the Hospital's appeal for Paediatrics staff and are willing to join in the Faculty. However, they are requesting more than the remuneration payable by the University. The regulations of the University will not allow the payment requested by them. The Consultants are expecting an additional sum of Rs. 75,000/= per month [~US$750] as their remuneration. The payment of this sum is needed at least for two years from 2003 till the staff position is improved.

The Dean of Medicine, University of Jaffna has requested assistance in this matter. Please contact the sangam's president
president@sangam.org ) concerning the sangam's efforts to assist the Hospital.
