Even though GSP+ was withdrawn from Sri Lanka we have to remember that Sri Lanka continues to benefit from GSP.

On the other hand GSP benefits were withdrawn from Burma in 1997.

In your book, you talk about a "structural violence". What is the meaning of this?

Jean Ziegler: In the empire of shame, controlled by organized scarcity [of food and essentials], war is not sporadic any more, it is permanent. It is not any more a crisis, a pathology, but normality. It does not any more imply the eclipse of reason - as Horkheimer expressed it - it is the very raison d’être of the empire. The lords of the financial war have put the planet under the scalpel of organized economic destruction. They attack the normative power of the States, challenge the sovereignty of the people, subvert democracy, wreak havoc on nature, destroy human beings and their freedoms. The liberalization of the economy, the "invisible hand" of the market, is their way of dealing with the universe; the maximalization of profit is the way it works. I call this practice and this cosmogony structural violence.

Anonymous of 10th july, Thanks for providing a relevant quotation. The old phrase "war and Peace" has to be replaced by " war with resistance and war without resistance". All the "Peace brokers" should now understand that Eelam Tamils are facing a war without resistance because 20 governments have got together and broken the resistance arm of the Tamils, the LTTE. Now GOSL has doubled the armed forces and doubled their budget to nip any developing resistance in the bud. The enemies against Liberation are globally united (20 governments against Eelam Tamils,46 governments against Afghans and so on) and at the same time they have succeeded 100% in dividing the oppressed peoples. It is a tragic comedy that Kohane is leading investigation against Israel while continuing to receive arms aid from Israel and Lo behold, some Palestinian Jokers of the Abbas brand want to defend GOSL against Western attacks! We need to understand the various and vicious forms of the global war against the oppressed and work tirelessly for the unity of the oppressed peoples.

Director and founder of Naam Thamilar movement, Seeman on Friday urged Russian authorities to back the UN-appointed three-member team to probe the alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka during the final phase of the civil war.

Mr Seeman presented a memorandum to the Consulate General of Russian Federation in Mylapore on Friday urging them to support the UN probe and help Tamils get justice.

“Russia’s present stand supporting Colombo in the genocidal war is disappointing millions of Tamils. We appeal to them to change their stand and support the UN probe to bring the truth,” he said

Accusing Rajapaksa regime of insulting the UN team, Seeman said that proper enquiry into the massacre was pertinent and the world should not allow Sri Lanka to sweep the truth under the carpet.

One doesn’t have to feel intrigued by the protest in Colombo.

Led by a loyalist minister of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government, the demonstrators want the United Nations to call off the probe into war crimes the Sri Lankan army is alleged to have committed against the Tamil in the closing days of the civil war last year.

The verdict on Sri Lanka should come as a warning to other armies fighting on their own soil.

The principle of showing humanity to civilians and wounded enemy soldiers and prisoners is sacrosanct and must be respected.
